Volunteers helped spruce up the grounds at Wyndham Lawn Home for Children in Lockport as part of the Eastern Niagara United Way’s Day of Caring on Wednesday, Aug. 15. Volunteers are paired up with local non-profit organizations to clean, paint, fix up and do what ever needs to be done.
“It gives me a chance to give back to the community,” said Elaine Alicea, a front end cashier at the Tops Market on South Transit Road in Lockport.
The volunteers tackled a few large projects at Wyndham Lawn.
“They can accomplish a lot in a short time because there are quite a few of them,” said Paula Goodrich, Support Services supervisor at Wyndham Lawn. “It makes everything look lovely. We appreciate their help.”
Wyndham Lawn is a program of New Directions Youth and Family Services, which helps youth with emotional and behavioral problems, along with their families. Wyndham Lawn is a residential treatment facility. Other New Directions services include diagnostic services, a school, group homes, family support and children’s mental health services.
Molly Kucharski of Lockport, bakery manager at the Tops Market on South Transit Road in Lockport, rakes the volleyball court at Wyndham Lawn Home for Children while other volunteers take care of the edging and weeding.
Don Starkey of Newfane, produce manager at the Tops Market on South Transit Road in Lockport, was one of a team of volunteers who helped out at Wyndham Lawn Home for Children. The volunteers allowed Wyndham Lawn to tackle some large projects.
