Teens from Randolph Children’s Home
help with painting at community center

Members of the Timberwolves leadership club of Randolph Children’s Home recently volunteered to paint the floors of the Cattaraugus Community Action and Lighthouse Soup Kitchen in Salamanca.
“It was a lot of hard work,” said Sherry Sheaffer, the Timberwolves advisor.
“We had to put tape down so that we didn’t get paint everywhere. It was hard work crawling around on our hands and knees, but we got it done in four hours. It was an adventure.”
Painting floors is not the only volunteer work the Timberwolves do.
Two times a month, the Timberwolves paint toys for the Toymakers of Randolph, which go to children in distress. They help at St. Susan Center, a soup kitchen, and the Chautauqua County Humane Society, both in Jamestown. They also serve dinners at benefits.
This month the Timberwolves laid down 100 gallons of pavement sealer to restore the path in Weeden Road Sports Park in Randolph. They also helped restore a cemetery in Gowanda, taking six hours to dig up and reset headstones.
“They work very hard,” said Sheaffer. “The kids are eager to help; they’ll help who ever is in need.”
Sheaffer is responsible for organizing the community services the teens provide. To keep the teens motivated and on the right track, she instills in them the aspects of Normative Culture, which are respect, responsibility, safety and goals.
The Randolph Children’s Home is a program of New Directions Youth and Family Services, which helps children with emotional and behavioral problems, along with their families. The agency offers preventative and community-based treatment, educational services, supervised independent living, therapeutic foster care, non-secure detention, group homes and residential treatment.
