Teen from Zafron Home for Parenting Teens learns during field trip to New York City

Katie, a teen at Zafron Home for Parenting Teens, was able to broaden her horizons by taking a high school field trip to New York City, with support from staff at the home. Here is what Katie wrote about the experience:

I had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel with Salamanca High School’s Drama Club to New York City.

I attended the play The Fantasticks, which is a play about characters similar to Romeo and Juliet; the twist was that their fathers actually wanted them together. I also attended the play The 39 Steps. There were 138 characters portrayed by four actors.

Most importantly, during my trip I attended theater workshops in the theater district. At the workshop I had the opportunity to meet the gentleman who played Louise’s father in The Fantasticks. The theater workshop was very interactive and fun, and I learned so much.

Going to New York City was a wonderful experience, as well as a fun mini-vacation. I visited many historic sites, including the former site of the World Trade Center. I walked down Wall Street and learned why it was named that. (The Indians and the immigrants divided Manhattan with a wall, hence the name “Wall Street.”) I visited the place where George Washington took his oath to become the first president. During the evening, I visited the top of the Rockefeller Center. New York City is very beautiful at night and the view from the “Top of the Rock” is absolutely breathtaking! Times Square was also amazing; I saw the ball that was dropped to celebrate the 2009 New Year.

Through fundraisers, assistance from the New Directions Child Service Fund and my county, I was able to make this trip come true.

I would like to thank all the Zafron Home staff, especially Ms. Kathy DiLallo, coordinator at Zafron Home, for making it possible for me to attend this trip. It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
